似乎当爱情失败的时候好像什么都已经终结了，但是这个时候的终结却带来了一个新的开始。卡特为了逃避索菲亚和他分手的事实，离开了LA到了十数年没有碰面的外祖母家中，而故事的开始正正是因为这么一场分手戏份开始的，也就是经常在人们口中说的：开始源于终结。影片雕琢了卡特宜人的个性，但是他却不能逃避现实的事情，尽管他逃离了环境，依旧对着索菲亚恋恋之爱。在他外祖母家中居住的一段时间，认识了莎拉以及她的两个女儿。莎拉的丈夫有外遇，而她的大女儿露西对她有所顾忌（或许是害怕面对），小女儿佩西显得不太与年纪相符的成熟，却始终还是一个小孩子。莎拉遇上卡特，是为了倾诉心中的言语，显得她对这个家庭有无奈之感。感觉上就是将自己的整个青春奉献在家人身上却得不到回报。其然，在什么时候她依旧深爱着她的孩子，关于她的大女儿露西，她有所不解的就是为什么露西对她有所顾忌。卡特于是穿插在了这个家庭的女人之间。影片莎拉带着卡特到了一个美妙的神秘地方，就好像科幻影片的场景，显然是一种手法来言明女人们的领地中某一种真实的含义，而这种含义只能是观众自己去理解了。
